This Week in SCY High Chemistry

For the Week of October 29

*YOU MUST BRING AN EMPTY AND CLEAN 2-LITER BOTTLE OR YOU WILL RECIEVE A ZERO ON THE WATER FILTRATION ACTIVITY THIS THURSDAY 11/1/2007.

I hope everyone stayed safe this last week. This week will be our first full week of the semester! This means that we gotta get right to work. You will present your Chemical Family Coat-of-Arms Projects Friday of this week (11/2/2007). Your ROUGH typed essay portion for the coat-of-arms project is due next Tuesday (11/6/2007).

The Element Tile FINAL DRAFT Essays are due no later than this Friday (11/2/2007).
Also, (if you are unhappy with your score on your latest element tile, you may resubmit your tile for a replacement grade no later than (11/6/2007).

Exam 1

Exam 1 will be held on Thursday 11/15/2007. You will have all class period to complete the exam. Exam 1 will cover all or most of the following:

Subatomic Particle Counting
Isotopes and Ions
Density Calculations
Dimensional Analysis
Chemical Families
Classification of Matter
Molar Mass
Empirical/Molecular Formula
Mole Calculations: moles <--> grams; moles<-->atoms/molecules
Vocabulary since Chapter 1

Quiz 4: Isotopes and Ions mole calculations (11/6/2007)

Objectives:

Tuesday
- To learn how to determine the number of subatomic particles in isotopes and ions; to learn to classify matter; introduction to moles, molar mass and chemical formulas.

Thursday - Coat-of-arms Benchmark check; Water filtration activity (BRING A 2-Liter BOTTLE), continue work on mole calculations.

Friday - Coat-of-Arms Project Presentations;

Tuesday - To learn to convert between grams, moles, and particles. To determine the thickness of foil.

IN-CLASS ASSESSMENT:
  • What is the difference between a homogeneous versus a heterogenous mixture?
  • There are two bottles of water: one says "distilled" and the other says "tap". How would you classify the two? Explain your reasoning.
  • Distinguish between substance, element, mixture, compound, molecule
  • What how many protons, neutrons and electrons are in: 9-Li+ ; 238-U+6 ; 37-Cl - ?
  • What is the molar mass of C6H12O11; AgNO3; Fe(ClO3)3 ?
  • What is the difference between a molecule and a mole?
  • When do you use AMU and when do you use g/mol?
  • Why must scientists count in moles?
  • How many moles of tacos are there in 3.01 x 10E22 tacos?
  • How many molecules of water did you collect from the filtration experiement?
  • 100,000 atoms = _______ moles?

Project: Chemical Family Coat of Arms is (Due 11/2/2007) and the ROUGH DRAFT essay portion is due (11/6/2007)

Periodic Table of the Elements
Class of 2010 Edition. We will begin our first project, which will be on-going throughout the year. In this project, you will begin by
  1. PICK an element you want to learn about.
  2. RESEARCH the required information about your element.
  3. PROPOSE a clever design element tile for an element tile.
  4. TYPE a short report contrasting the positive and negative impact your element has for society.
  5. PRESENT to the class about what you learned.
Homework:
  • Isotopes and Ions (Check 11/2/2007)
  • Molar Mass (Check 11/2/2007)
  • Mole Counting
  • Molar Mass 2
