Welcome back, Gentelemen, to Semester No. 2. We will begin this semester with organic chemistry (the chemistry of carbon), and then we will expand our focus by learning about biochemistry. In this unit, we will learn what makes carbon such an important element for life, the kinds of properties that functional groups impart on substance, and also learn about the chemicals of lie: DNA, proteins, lipids, sugars.
In-class: Nomenclature practice; Saturated v. unsaturated hydrocarbons, Pharma Project time, cis- trans- isomers, Functional group media, glue polymer lab pharma brochure research

Sign up for blogger.com account, and decide which vitamin/antioxidant you are using.
Answer the following questions in your blog.
- Give your blog a clever RELEVANT title (not "Biochem Project")
- Choose a vitamin or nutrient in your Jamba Juice to research (no duplicates) such as: vitamin A, B1, B6, B12, C, D, E, K, other antioxidants...
- Cite the important chemical and physical properties (find them at webstites like chemfinder.com)
- Formula
- Molar Mass
- Physical state at room temperature
- Water soluble/insoluble?
- Picture of your chemical structure on your blog
- List the different functional groups on your molecule.
- MP, BP
- Physical hazards (MSDS)
- Why is your molecule importatnt to your health?
- What conditions can result from a lack of your chemical in a diet?
- What can happen if you ingest too much of your chemical?
- Explain what a biomolecule is.
- List the 4 main types of bio-molecules and what their functions in the body are.
- Find a pciture of each type of biomolecule for your blog.
- Choose a class of biomolecules from Chapter 24.2 and answer the "Section Assessment" questions IN FULL SENTENCES in your blog.
